when send email from a@gmail.com to b@tom.com, gmail SMTP may go through several SMTP servers, such as gmail SMTP->1 SMTP->2 SMTP->tom SMTP, right?

my question is: How could gmail SMTP know it should go to 1 SMTP? or in other words, who defines 1 SMTP is the one after gmail SMTP?

Hi,

1 SMTP is probably an internal google SMTP server for outbound mail. The only way to know how to send to tom.com is to ask the DNS for the mail server for tom.com.
